Within these
pages we trace the origin of the Colchian peoples from Prehistory, the
Neolithic and Bronze Age. Of early settlements and archaeological
excavations, Maps and early coins. The name of Colchis first appeared in
Aeschylus and Pindar when the area was inhabited by a number of tribes whose
settlements lay chiefly along the shore of the Black Sea. These tribes
differed so completely in language and appearance from the surrounding
nations, that the ancients originated various theories to account for the
phenomenon. Featured is the work by Appollonius Rhodius that depicts a
journey made by the Argonauts to Colchia and their search for the Golden
Fleece. Also included is a look at Colchia (and Georgia) from the Classical
age. The rise of the Church and of the Monarchies. An obscure area (often
overlooked by modern historians) and well-worth a revisit in order for us to
understand the area, and the early history of the Republic of Georgia.
